How to tell if a card show is legit
Most card shows are run by people who love the hobby. Still, a few quick checks before you buy a ticket or a vendor table can save you money and a wasted weekend. Here is what to look at.
1. Confirm the organizer and the venue
Look for the organizer's business name, not just a social media handle. Check that the venue named in the listing exists and that the date matches the venue's own event calendar. If you can, call the venue and ask if the show is booked.
Be careful if the address is vague, keeps changing, or is only shared after you pay.
2. Ask about insurance
Established shows usually carry general liability insurance, and many venues require it. If you are vending, it's fair to ask the organizer whether the event is insured and whether vendors need their own coverage.
3. Look for a seal you can verify
A seal image alone proves nothing, because anyone can copy a picture. A real Trade Show Association seal comes with a Certificate ID, such as SA-2026-ABC123. Enter that ID at tradeshowassociation.com/verify, or scan the QR code on the seal, and check that the show name, dates, and city match.
The seal means the show's organizer met our published standards and is a member in good standing. It is a private, independent program, not a government license, and it does not guarantee any goods or vendors.
4. Ask about security and refunds
For vendors: ask how load-in, overnight storage, and the floor are secured, and what happens if the show is canceled or moved. Get table terms and the refund policy in writing before you pay.
For attendees: check the ticket refund policy, and pay with a method that offers buyer protection.
5. Search past reviews
Search the show name and the organizer's name together with words like review, vendor, or canceled. Read past attendee and vendor posts in hobby groups and forums. Look for patterns, not one angry post.
6. Report concerns
If a show claims a Trade Show Association seal that doesn't verify, or you see a problem at a sealed show, tell us on the Report a Concern page. We review every report.
Common questions
- How do I check if a card show's seal is real?
- Find the Certificate ID on the seal (for example SA-2026-ABC123) and enter it at tradeshowassociation.com/verify, or scan the seal's QR code. The verify page shows the show's name, dates, and city, and whether the seal is currently valid.
- Does a seal guarantee the cards sold at a show?
- No. The seal shows that the organizer met published standards for the show. It does not guarantee any goods or vendors, so inspect cards and use buyer protection as you normally would.
- Is Trade Show Association a government agency?
- No. Trade Show Association is a private, independent accreditation and seal program.
- What should vendors ask before paying for a table?
- Ask about the venue booking, insurance, security for load-in and storage, and the refund policy if the show is canceled or moved. Get the terms in writing.
- Where can I report a problem with a show?
- Use the Report a Concern page at tradeshowassociation.com/report.
